Newcastle Kids Take Silver Not Silverware

9 years ago

Newcastle United’s development squad kicked off on Saturday morning in their bid to retain the Hong Kong 7s title they won last year.

The tournament took place at the Happy Valley stadium of Hong Kong Football Club, with games lasting 7 minutes each way.

United opened up with a 2-0 win against a Hong Kong select, followed later that day by wins against Southern District (5-0) and then Leicester (2-0).

The United squad that travelled was;

Alnwick, Dummett, Streete, Tavernier, Newton, Logan, Inman, Richardson, Aarons & Sammy Ameobi.

With three wins Newcastle topped their group and moving on to Sunday they had a quarter final knockout match against Citizen, moving into the semis with a two goal win thanks to Newton and Tavernier.

The semi finals proved a tougher task with Glasgow Rangers the opposition. In an exciting match United just came out on top 3-2 with goals from Richardson and Sammy Ameobi (2). The Rangers goals were the first Newcastle had conceded this weekend.

In the final Leicester provided the opposition having beaten Sunderland 1-0. With United comfortably beating the Foxes on Saturday, hopes were high that the lads could retain their trophy.

However, as a reminder of what a funny old game football can be, Leicester reversed the previous day’s result and won the final 2-0.

On the positive side, Newcastle gave a great account of themselves and can be satisfied with their efforts.
