How Newcastle’s Team Would Look If They Were Relegated

What would happen to NUFC if we were to go down this season?

What would happen to the squad, the manager and the board? Although I am not on the ‘Pardew out’ bandwagon (yet), it would be naive to overlook this situation and our position in the table is quite alarming.

Unlike 2009, our squad is a lot healthier and the players are more talented. This means that if we were to drop into the second tier of English football, the gifted players we do have at our disposal will disperse, possibly leaving the players that truly care about the club.

Firstly, I feel that most of our top players would look to move on. In my opinion Yohan Cabaye loves the club and the fans but would not settle for Championship football and would look to move on, possibly to PSG who, if you believe what you read in the papers, have a firm interest in the Frenchman. Coloccini would look to leave also and Mike Ashley may be a bit more inclined to listen to a deal from San Lorenzo to get our captain off of our wage bill. Ben Arfa would also leave, possibly back to his favourite club, PSG. these moves could happen if we have Premier League football or not.

Some of our new French players could also look to leave after showing some quality in the games since arriving, Sissoko, Gouffran, Debuchy and Mbiwa are all French internationals and would they travel to the following year’s World Cup if they are playing on a soggy pitch in Barnsley week in, week out. Tiote, although having a terrible season, is a gifted footballer and I could see him moving to a premier league team like Spurs or Chelsea.

Tim Krul and Davide Santon are targets for AC Milan if you believe the papers; one being a top quality goalkeeper, the other being a young talented wing back, so the Championship may not appeal to them. Cisse is said to be attracting interest in Germany and is also a top player as he showed when he arrived, despite saying he wanted stay at Newcastle for years to come, he could cut it in a European team, so why stay put? Finally, Marveuax has proven he is a good player and Anita has not really settled and does not get into the team, so both could be tempted to jump ship.

What about players being sold anyway? There is talk of quite of few of our current squad being sold even if we don’t not get relegated and I feel some will still leave. Players like Obertan and Abeid could be sold to get them off the wage bill but some players like Williamson and Gosling, who might have been sold, may have to stay to fill vacant positions. Those who are out of contract such as Simpson and Harper will leave regardless.

Finally, we move onto those coming in or staying. I think Shola will be offered a new contract and most of our young players will stay. I also think Jonas will stay as he looks to be a loyal servant. If relegation occurs, I feel the only players that will arrive will be young players. I think a goalkeeper, a couple of strikers and a couple of wingers may be useful for our push to return to the top flight. Steven Taylor won’t leave andIi have left Ryan Taylor out of the team below because of his injury but I do think he will stay. Below is the team I think we would have if we were in the Championship next year, I have put two players in each position and positions that I feel will be filled by a new signing are marked with a ‘*’.

Shola/*        Campbell/*

Gutierrez/*                  Perch/Bigirimana/Gosling       Sameobi/*

Haidara/Ferguson        Williamson/Saylor/Mbabu      Tavernier/*

If you would change the team or feel any other players would stay or go then put it in the comments.

Hopefully the above won’t be the case and we are playing premier league football again next season, whilst keeping all our best players in a black and white shirt.
