Holidays Cancelled For Newcastle Staff As Mike Ashley Loses £4m
While we’ve all been disappointed with the season and the fact Newcastle couldn’t at least sign off with a morale boosting win against decent opposition, spare a thought for a number of people who had an extra special reason to have the prayer mats out for a win against Arsenal.
Over the last 24 hours it became public knowledge that Mike Ashley was giving a bonus of £1m to be shared amongst United’s lower earning staff, IF the team beat Arsenal and brought in the extra money a higher league position would bring..
Whether this (the £1m bonus story) was deliberately leaked or not, the bottom line is that the watching club employees today would have watched in anticipation as the first half looked as though it could yield a win, only then to suffer the agonies of the second forty five.
Victory today would have meant an extra £3.2m in the club coffers, while an unlikely six goal or better win would have bumped that up to around £4m as it would have meant finishing above Norwich as well. Even a draw would have meant a couple of places and around £1.6m extra.
So members of staff who might earn fifteen or twenty grand haven’t got the ten grand bonus or similar that they could have landed. As we mentioned this morning, wouldn’t it be great if the players turned around and said that collectively they were putting this money up instead as an apology for the disappointing season. Or if Mike Ashley still put the cash up…
What a shot in the arm it would be for the image of the modern football player.
