Fans Vote On Which Newcastle Players Are Essential & Who Is Past Their Sell By Date

11 years ago

At the end of each season we run a fans’ poll in our magazine, asking readers to vote on all kinds of topics to do with Newcastle United.

We then collate the thousands of votes and publish all the results in the summer special (out on 8th June – pre-order in our online shop – only £3) of our magazine.

Contributing to those totals, each day we’ll be asking you to vote via the website on a single question, we’ll leave it open for 24 hours and then let you know what the website voting has been.

Yesterday we asked ;

Which 6 Newcastle Players Would you Definitely Keep For Next Season?

Fans could only place 6 votes and below we list the players with the percentage of the fans who voted for each;

89% Krul
82% Cabaye
79% Ben Arfa
74% Coloccini
71% Sissoko
36% Cisse
35% Mapou
29% Santon
28% Steven Taylor
20% Debuchy
15% Gouffran
14% Marveaux
11% Haidara
  7% Anita
  6% Tiote
  3% Perch
  2% Jonas
  1% Shola
0.4% Gosling
0.1% Williamson

The results ended up being very illuminating.

No surprise to see Krul top the ratings but then despite having seasons affected by injuries and indifferen form, Cabaye and Ben Arfa are recognised as essential to provide creativity. Colo is clearly rated our best defender while despite Sissoko dropping off his initial blistering form, fans patently think there is more of the same to come from him.

Those five are out on their own and would now appear to be our top top players.

Then you have another distinct group made up of Cisse, Mapou, Santon, Steven Taylor and Debuchy who look to be rated as clear choices for the first team, giving us ten of our first eleven.

Following those we have a mini group of Gouffran, Marveaux and Haidara who look to be seen as good enough for the first team but not clear first choice to start.

Then penultimately Anita, Tiote, Jonas and Perch all seen as squad players….with Shola, Gosling and Williamson bringing up the rear.

The two who stand out like a sore thumb must be Jonas and especially Tiote, these figures showing just how far they have fallen out of favour with the fans. Two players who were seen as key not so long ago.

As for journalist/newspapers trying to blame the French influence at Newcastle for last season’s failings, the fans have shown they weren’t taken in by that with 3 of our top top players being French and indeed 8 out of the top 13.

Thanks to the thousands of you who voted and watch out for our next Fans’ Poll question coming up shortly.
