Fans Around Europe Show Support For Safe Standing

Football fans all over Europe have made clear that they want to have the choice of standing at football matches.

Surveys in the UK have repeatedly shown that fans in the English and Scottish Leagues want to have the option of standing, with the likes of the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF) mobilising support for the idea week by week.

Now a survey of over 1,200 fans around Europe have overwhelmingly backed the idea of having then choice of standing. The findings of the survey commissioned by online football manager game Hatrick, resulted in 75% stating they’d prefer to stand, while 14% would still choose to sit if they had the choice and 11% not bothered either way.

In Germany for example you have the bizarre situation of clubs in the Bundesliga safely hosting matches week in week out with tens of thousands of standing fans helping to produce some amazing atmospheres.

Then if German teams qualify for Europe they have to convert their modern safe stadiums which incorporate standing areas and reduce their capacities, with the standing areas changed over to sitting via various ingenious designs.

The design of the German standing areas is totally different to the factors that caused the Hillsborough tragedy and studies have shown that fans standing in seated areas is far more dangerous. A practice that every Premier League club’s away following does, including Liverpool fans.
