Claims Of Carroll Waiting For Newcastle As He Stalls West Ham
Various media sources are claiming that Andy Carroll is stalling on signing for West Ham, in the hope that Newcastle will come in with a rival bid.
The Hammers are reported to have had a £15m fee agreed with Liverpool and now it is down to the player.
It will be a relief whatever happens, as it will finish the never ending speculation of a Tyneside return, which has existed ever since Brendan Rodgers walked into Anfield and made it clear Carroll didn’t figure in his plans.
While it has been repeatedly claimed that Carroll would be willing to take a hit on his £90,000 a week wages to get a move back to Newcastle, it would surprise you in the modern age if any player accepted a drop in pay.
More than that though, the thought of Mike Ashley paying out £15m for a player with no clear possibility of an increase in his future value, would be a major shift in policy. This despite it representing a £20m profit from Carroll’s sale to Liverpool.
If Carroll ends up at West Ham I have a horrible feeling that this could indicate limited funds for Newcastle’s summer transfer activity. I hope I’m wrong.
