Where Does Yoan Gouffran Belong?
A good win yesterday against Fulham gives us some well deserved breathing space to focus on Thursday’s game against Benfica.
One mustn’t forget however that after the Benfica game we host Sunderland, in this mouthwatering derby we could actually drop our mackem rivals into the relegation zone, oh what joy that would bring me.
Santon was brought off to add to our long injury list, leaving the team even more stretched. Even with these injuries though I still think our starting 11 are pure quality, our bench not so much, this is why I think it is vital that Pardew finds a way to get the most out every single player in our starting 11. One player that stands out for me is Yoan Gouffran.
We got Gouffran for only £1.2 million from Bordeaux this January, along with our other French recruits, and he is the only one I have felt has yet to be used to best suit his abilities. Don’t get me wrong, I think the player is great; nice pace and composure on the ball and he seems to be a hard worker but I see him as a goalscorer, not out on the wing putting them into the box.
Debuchy I think has settled nicely immediately, taking Simpson’s spot in the starting 11. M’biwa has also settled in, replacing the injured Coloccini and doing a damn good job of it too. Sissoko, I mean wow, I hope this lad is with us for years and years to come, already one of the top players in the league. Finally Haidara, I think he has shown a lot of promise and should certainly be played in cup games and be on the bench in the league, definitely one to watch for the future.
That leaves Gouffran. Since he’s arrived he’s been played out on the wing. I thought we bought him to add a striker to a squad that desperately needs a few. Since he’s arrived he has created many chances and is unlucky not to have a few goals to his name, hitting the post today an example of his attacking presence.
Cisse has found it hard to find the back of the net this season and it’s evident that one, even two, new strikers are needed in the summer but until then I think we should play Gouffran up with Cisse in more of an attacking role.
If Pardew could find a way to play and get the best out of the 2 strikers up forward together I think we’d have found a winning combination.
