Sunderland Fans Banned From Newcastle Match
In advance of the Newcastle v Sunderland derby at St.James’ Park on Sunday, Northumbria Police appear to be more proactive than ever in terms of clamping down on possible crowd disorder.
After the over the top announcement yesterday of possible action against any Newcastle fans taking the mick out of the visiting manager’s fascist leanings, it has been revealed today that the police have prevented 54 targeted Sunderland fans from travelling to the match, via banning orders.
With potential relegation at stake, tension will be even higher than on most occasions and the police obviously see the furore surrounding Di Canio as something that will add to friction between fans.
Wrongly in my opinion, as I think it has been more of a distraction that has been separate to derby rivalry, with the whole country apparently having an opinion on the subject.
Unfortunately, we’ll never again ever see big away followings at derby matches as even if we ever met in a cup match the clubs would no doubt agree between them (and the police!) to take a lower allocation than they’d be entitled to.
Like many of you I look back fondly on the days of thousand upon thousand of us standing in the Roker….or Fulwell end!
