Newcastle United – Struggling To Corner
You know the routine, a decent attack ends with a save and deflection with the ball ending up behind for a corner.
Yohan Cabaye, Sylvain Marveaux or whoever, trot over to the corner flag to a warming round of applause and then…the opposition are counter-attacking.
You must be a real hopeless optimist to get even the little bit excited when Newcastle get a corner these days.
Most of you probably know that Demba Ba was the last Newcastle player to score from a corner at Wolves back in October 2011, since then United have had 319(!) corners in the Premier league and not scored once.
A case in point is last season’s home match against the mackems, if you remember Newcastle were dismal in the first half but then battered them in the second. However, much of that pressure simply resulted in corners and despite nineteen of them in that one match it was beyond us to find the net.
Could our chances of changing that rest on whether one player makes it back onto the pitch today?
Apart from that Ba goal at Wolves you have to go back almost two years to May 2011 for the previous United goal from a corner. Bizarrely, it was the third match in a row that we’d scored from a corner and they were all from then same player!
Yes, another reason to hope Steven Taylor is fit today because back in May 2011 he scored in three successive matches; Birmingham (H), Chelsea (A) and West Brom (H), all from corners.
Watch below how to do it, bog standard corner knocked in and attack the ball, simple!
