Hatem Ben Arfa Tells Newcastle Fans He’s Going Nowhere

9 years ago

A European night of drama saw a brilliant second half performance by Newcastle United which just failed to get them over the line against Benfica.

The record books will show that United could only draw and go out 4-2 on aggregate but the real picture was that after a safety first opening half, Newcastle really went for it and had the visitors reeling on the ropes.

Alan Pardew threw a clearly half-fit Hatem Ben Arfa on for the last half hour and despite not being fully wound up, Ben Arfa caused all sorts of problems as he helped to make the goal and then with normal time almost up, Hatem cut inside and unleashed a powerful drive that cleared the bar.

However, afterwards Ben Arfa was down but not out and dismissed any talk of heading to Liverpool or anywhere else when speaking to the Chronicle;

“I want to stay here, it’s only journalists who talk about that. Me and my agent haven’t talked about that.

I’m focused on Newcastle 100%, I hope to stay here.

Everything’s here, it is a great club, we’ve a great squad, big ground and great fans.

We’ve a great team and I’d love to play for this team in Europe again, we won’t next season, but after that maybe go again.

We were disappointed but also a little proud because we gave a good game.”
