Benfica Honour Sir Bobby Robson
A nice touch tonight will see Benfica pay tribute to Sir Bobby Robson.
Sir Bobby of course made a real impact on Portuguese football when he spent four years managing Porto and Sporting Lisbon.
Porto snapped up Sir Bobby and his assistant Jose Mourinho (wonder whatever happened to him?) and the Geordie manager took the struggling club from gates of 10,000 to win the domestic cup and consecutive league titles. Locals nicknamed the manager ‘Bobby Five-Oh’ in honour of the number of matches Porto won 5-0.
Robson eventually left to manage Barcelona but such were the foundations he’d left, Porto won the title in the next three seasons as well.
Tonight the President of Benfica will be laying flowers at the statue of Sir Bobby Robson, as a tribute to Sir Bobby from Benfica Football Club.
Sir Bobby’s statue is situated in the SW corner of the ground, just off Strawberry Place.
The laying of flowers is timed for 6.20pm this evening.
Credit to the visiting club for this gesture, a little thought goes a long way.
