Alan Pardew – ‘We’d Taken The Sting Then Gifted Them A Goal’

Alan Pardew looked to get his tactics perfect tonight and only the woodwork and two rushes of blood have meant Newcastle leave Lisbon with only the comfort of an away goal.

The manager though was understandably proud of his team when he spoke after the match;

“I thought that we did so much right to get into what was a great position. We’d taken the sting out of them and then we gifted them a goal.

I thought that Steven Taylor was desperately unlucky with the penalty. It just wasn’t to be but I can’t fault the players.

It was a great effort by the team, we came here to have a real go at them.”

The Santon mistake was undoubtedly the big moment of the tie, though if either Cisse woodwork effort had gone in…

I’m afraid I can’t agree with the manager on Taylor, much as I love Steven Taylor he does have those kind of Dabizas moments when he grabs players or otherwise reacts without thinking.

As no doubt Alan Pardew is saying to his players, it is only half-time in this cup-tie.
