Vote Of Confidence for Newcastle Defenders Who Kept Anzhi Out
In our man of the match poll though, it was especially interesting to see who the fans chose as the pick of the bunch.
Top marked was Mapou with 33%, followed by Perch in 2nd with 25% then Haidara (16%) and Rob Elliot (10%).
Bit of a theme building up here…they were all in our back five last night, with Danny Simpson the only one not making the top rankings.
Playing in very difficult conditions and against players such as the world class striker Eto’o, it was a great show by that defence.
What makes it all the more interesting though is that arguably none of that back five are first choice with everybody fit and the manager picking his very best first eleven.
If you go back to the Spurs match less than a month ago, with all options available, Alan Pardew’s first choice defence was Krul, Debuchy, Coloccini, Taylor and Santon, a completely different back five!
After looking wafer thin for most of the season, we are now really kicking on in terms of having some strength in depth that isn’t just making up the numbers.
The defence last night has certainly given Alan Pardew something to think about in advance of Stoke on Sunday.
