Surprise Recall For Newcastle Star…And New Contract?
We have already reported in the past that it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise in the world for Danny Simpson to end up staying at St.James’ park.
Now in advance of the match against Manchester City, Alan Pardew has dropped heavy hints when speaking to the Chronicle that Simpson will start in the absence of players such as Debuchy and Santon, plus a new contract isn’t out of the question…;
He is in an unfortunate position in terms of his contract, so he is very hungry to get a new one, whether it is here or somewhere else.”
Simpson is a reliable six or seven out of ten player week in week out, he wouldn’t cost a transfer fee obviously and in the current squad I think he would get a place on the bench as valuable cover.
While funds will be available in the summer I think serious money will need to be spent elsewhere, especially for another striker, so it would make sense to try and save a bit of money elsewhere in the squad.
As for Simpson, it looked as though Wigan were the only ones to show real interest in January and I’d hope the player would see continuing at Newcastle as a more attractive opposition, even as cover.
