Stronger Squad Gives Pardew Confidence To Tell Stars They Must Do Better

The signings of some very decent players in January has not only added extra ability to Alan Pardew’s squad, it has also helped him to stoke up the players who were already at the club.

With extra competition for places, even to get on the bench, Shola Ameobi revealed recently that Pardew had taken him to one side to demand more from him than he’d been giving.

Now it is the turn of the player who Alan Pardew ranks as being our best player in the first half of the season, this is what he said to The Journal about Davide Santon;

“I think he’s had a couple of matches when he’s been disappointing for me. It has actually coincided with his call-up (for Italy).

Sometimes that can happen to a player, you’ve achieved your goal, he starts for Italy and then has just come off it a bit.

Trust me, I’ve worked hard this week with him to refocus about how he got into the Italian team as first half of the season, he was probably our best player.

I won’t though restrict his attacking forays and in fact I’ll be encouraging him more. Defensively though he definitely needs to concentrate a bit more”.

I really like Santon and love the look of both he and Debuchy going forward but there is no doubt that Massadio Haidara’s impressive debut in the Ukraine has given Alan Pardew another string to his bow, competition for places is never a bad thing and I have a feeling that Santon will be stepping up a gear again today at Swansea.
