Spare A Thought For Newcastle United’s Neighbours

There is a sad and desperate situation on the doorstep of St.James’ Park.

Just over the water in Gateshead, they are unable to play home matches at the International Stadium for the rest of the season, due to the state of their pitch.

This has already led them to play ‘home’ matches at Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Carlisle, York and Blyth.

Worst of all though, tonight they are playing at ‘home’ at Boston’s York Street ground, a round trip of 368 miles to play Newport County in a Conference match, you couldn’t make it up! Boston was apparently the closest suitable ‘A-Grade’ ground available.

I know you have to have rules and Gateshead have already had special dispensation to play at Blyth because it didn’t meet certain requirements but…

Surely at that level a bit of common sense should come into play, instead of having to play a home match in the middle of nowhere in front of a handful of people.

Or as more than one or two Gateshead fans have said to me, why couldn’t Newcastle have helped their neighbours out?
