Snake In The Grass

In the days of terracing, you occasionally had the odd dog running on the pitch. Whether somebody brought them in for a laugh or they made their own way in, who knows.

On one memorable occasion, United striker Peter Withe dived full length to capture a border collie, before getting back up to meet a Terry Hibbitt free-kick only seconds later and nod the ball into the QPR net, stuff of legends.

Anyway, a modern day equivalent happened recently in India but I wouldn’t have been queuing up to clear the pitch on this occasion.

In a recent I-League fixture Mohan Bagan beat Arrows 3-2 but on the final whistle, a dozen poisonous snakes were spotted on the pitch and next to the dressing rooms.

The I-League CEO, Sunanda Dhar, was asked whether they would ban the stadium for future matches and he replied, “No but we have instructed the authorities to take proper measures to ensure that snakes are removed from the stadium”.

One of the competing players wasn’t so relaxed, Rahim Nabi saying, “I for one would be afraid of playing there again.”

You and me both!

With the English FA’s recent failings I wouldn’t have much faith in them dealing with poisonous snakes…

Have you seen anything equally as exotic on a football pitch?
