Shearer ‘United Must Invest Again’

9 years ago

Alan Shearer has been talking about where Newcastle United currently at and what they need to do if they want to build on the January signings.

Shearer has told the local media that Mike Ashley will need to spend again in the summer not just to keep up momentum, but just even to stand still;

“Bearing in mind you probably have to spend £15m-£20m just to stand still, it all depends.

Newcastle spent in January but hopefully they will spend again in the summer.

Nobody ever really expected them to repeat last season, in the league though we expected to be in a better position than we are. That will all be forgotten though if the go on and do well in the Europa League.

I don’t think we were ever in danger, particularly with the signings we made. We’ll be alright, we’ll be fine”.

Much like when Sir Bobby’s team made a couple of inspired additions in Laurent Robert and Craig Bellamy, I feel that a couple of quality additions in the right places could do a similar job for Newcastle United again.

That Sir Bobby team went from bottom half to top four in one go, I think now a realistic leap would be for new signings to help us get back into that top six.

Another quality striker, who would complement Cisse, plus one other of a similar standard could put United in a great position next August.

With the dual features of extra broadcasting riches and the Premier League collectively trying to control costs, the next couple of seasons could see a major shake-up of the Premier League and Newcastle United’s summer trading could be a significant factor in whether we’ll be one of those moving up in this period of transition.
