Pardew – ‘If We Can Beat Them We Can Beat Anybody’

9 years ago

Alan Pardew went with the old favourite of the twelfth man making the difference…but on this occasion he was right!

This is what the manager said when interviewed by the club’s official TV channel after the Anzhi match;

“It was a special night because it was made by the fans, they were unbelievable tonight. The noise levels when we created a bit of pressure, when we could, because trust me, they are one of the best teams in this competition.

They proved it in the first half and should have been ahead. We were a lot better in the second half and went 4-4-2 with Moussa (Sissoko) up top and created a bit of pressure, than at that point they had somebody sent off.

If we can beat them then we can beat anybody”.

While Alan Pardew talks about the noise levels when his team gave any encouragement, I think the majority of the credit for the fans is for not getting on the players’ backs when they were getting the run around in that first half. When they trooped off at half-time I didn’t hear a single boo, something that I reckon would have been assured if it had been a Premier League match.

Why the difference is I can’t tell you, apart from the obvious – the fans who tend to boo at Premier League matches when things are going badly, clearly don’t appear to go to cup matches such as the Anzhi one.

That then leads to a whole other argument of why a load of season ticket holders (half? the majority?) haven’t bothered with the Europa League matches.
