Newcastle United PR and Fans Turn Wigan Disaster Around

The disaster that was Wigan, both on and off the pitch, looks to be coming to a bit of closure.

The Haidara injury has thankfully not proved as bad as it looked at the time with the player due back early April, while off the pitch the club have intelligently handled the behaviour of some of our fans pre-match.

Most of you will have heard by now that when a number of our coaches arrived at Wigan, they parked adjacent to some amateur football pitches and supporters swarmed onto the pitch disrupting the match.

Wigan Cosmos had their ball stolen and there was other minor damage, embarrassingly the whole thing was filmed and seen by a worldwide audience.

In the aftermath, Newcastle fans got together and raised money to compensate the amateur team for their loss and then Newcastle United stepped in and did the same.

On top of that, the club have now invited Wigan Cosmos to play on the St.James’ Park pitch and while the gestures won’t receive quite the same amount of coverage as the original damage/embarrassment, it just shows how much goodwill can be generated by a little bit of money and consideration.

A big thumbs up to Newcastle United for the handling of the situation.

You may say it is simply common sense but how often have they got it wrong in the past?
