Newcastle United Fan To Conquer Australia

In each issue of our magazine we feature interviews with all kinds of people associated with Newcastle United; Chairmen, Managers, Players, Journalists, Fans….

One of the most interesting who we have interviewed before is Run Geordie Run, AKA Mark Allison.

The last time when we spoke to Mark it was when he’d ran across America fro charity, this time he talks again about his beloved Newcastle United and the small matter of his next project, running across Australia!

In the new issue of The Mag out this weekend, you can read the full interview with Mark/Run Geordie, below we bring you a couple of tasters and to read the whole interview and the rest of the magazine which as well as all the usual features has an interview with Simon Bird who covers Newcastle United for the Mirror, you can buy single copies and subscriptions in our online shop.

Are you expecting much help and support from Newcastle fans in Australia when you do the run?

I’ve already had a lot of emails and messages on Twitter from Geordies based in Australia. It looks like there’ll be a lot more black and white participation than there was in the USA.

Of Newcastle players past and present, who do you think would have the mental toughness to take on the type of runs that you do?

I think anyone who has the mental fortitude required to captain Newcastle United has some of the required attributes to run thousands of miles across a continent. You need the work ethic of Beardsley, the single minded confidence of Shearer and the grit and determination of Bracewell or  Coloccini.

I’ve read before how your weight fluctuates and no offence but you don’t sound like a natural born runner…?

You’re right. I’m not a natural born runner at all. I started the run across the USA at 18.4 stone! I lost 5.5 stone during that particular run.

With the best of intentions, I’m aiming to start the run across Australia at 14 stone. I anticipate losing 4 stone during the 70 days it’s going to take to run 2600 miles from Perth to Sydney. One thing’s for sure, I’m going to enjoy putting some (or all?) of that weight back on!

In what ways can people help you?

If anyone would like to sponsor the run across Australia then the link to my Virgin Money Giving page can be found on www.rungeordierun.com. On behalf of The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and The Children’s Foundation, thanks in advance for any donations.

The journey across Australia can be followed on twitter (@rungeordierun), on my blog (www.rungeordierun.com), in The Journal Newspaper and on Real Radio’s Breakfast show with Gary and Lisa.
