Newcastle Transfer Target Turns Down Euro Opponents Anzhi
The Russian transfer window has just closed but in the final days of February Anzhi tried to sign Douglas from FC Twente.
The defender will be out of contract in the summer and Newcastle have been repeatedly linked with the Dutch/Brazilian centre-back.
Douglas’ agent, Marcos Ribeiro, has claimed that due to interest from Inter Milan, the player turned down the Russians;
“It is good that a top club such as Anzhi made an offer for Douglas but he wants to play in Serie A.
When Inter showed an interest we decided to stop negotiations with the Russian club and wait for the summer transfer market”.
I think what we can take from this is that with all due respect to our Russian friends, Douglas didn’t fancy playing for a team where you can’t even live there and have to play your European matches over a thousand miles away because of political unrest.
Douglas might well fancy playing for Inter (amongst other non-Russian teams…) but come the summer I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Newcastle again looking at a player who will be out of contract, especially if Coloccini ends up leaving.
