Newcastle Prove Top Draw In Europe As Chelsea Stay At Home
I knew Spurs and Chelsea had got through but with being at our match I hadn’t really taken that much notice. When I had a look though at how their game had panned out, I couldn’t believe their cord figure, I even checked it out on their official site to make sure it wasn’t a mistake.
For a must win European game to go into the last eight, Chelsea had a crowd of 28,817!
Fans who have been given a team that only Manchester City have paid more for, stayed at home and watched it on the telly.
I’ve been disappointed at some of our relatively low crowds in the Europa League that, apart from Maritimo, have been in the low thirty thousands but when it gets to this stage…
Newcastle’s crowd of 45,487 against Anzhi was the highest of any English club this season in the Europa League and will remain so (unless we get a higher one), as Chelsea and Spurs (along with Liverpool) have a smaller capacity than that figure.
In these times of economic adversity, nowhere more so than the north east, I think the crowd against Anzhi gives us a lot of pride.
The bonus of course was that the crowd stayed with the team during a difficult first half, let’s make sure we get a repeat against Benfica.
