How To Save Newcastle United’s Season

The last thing I wrote was about complacency setting in because we had a good result over Chelsea, everyone coming out saying we’ll be fine now…well not without hard work, playing the right team and with the correct tactics.

I would prefer to get beaten at Manchester City by actually going and taking our game to them, rather than sit back with 10 men behind the ball and try and hit on a counter attack. You sit back, you lose.

So how do we get ourselves out of the mess we’re in? And believe me, we’re in a serious relegation battle here.

Well for a start, we pick the right players.  I understand we have injuries, especially at full back, but for me that’s not the area of concern.  Simpson can play there whilst Debuchy is out (we finished 5th with Simpson playing) and Haidara should be fit from Thursday.  I’m comfortable with the back 4 (no options!).

Without Santon and Debuchy, we need to play 4 across the middle.

Get back to 442 or 4411…

For me, the balance needs to be found in midfield and attack.  This is where we win games.  When you have Tiote and Cabaye playing together and go back and watch if you don’t believe me,  Cabaye ends up sitting back and Tiote is the player who plays without discipline – he follows the ball.

Cabaye then naturally sits and defends, taking him away from where we need him.  Cabaye should be the player in advanced midfield, co-ordinating attacks and looking for the killer pass – not Tiote.  To rectify this, Perch needs to play instead of Tiote.  When we have Perch/Cabaye – Perch sits and covers, allowing Cabaye to play where we need him.

We need wingers who can deliver a final ball, I’d play Marveaux on the left every time and I’d play Gouffran down the right (in the absence of Ben Arfa).

This leaves Sissoko playing off Cisse up front.  Sissoko would naturally balance Cabaye, allowing flexibility in those advanced roles.

Oh…and NEVER EVER Play Obertan again.  There is no desire there for the team and no one can tell me that he offered more than Marveaux would have yesterday!!
