Newcastle United Euro Hopes Lift As Anzhi Lose To Bottom Club And Injuries Pile Up
Newcastle United’s Europa League opponents appear to have problems piling up as their first match after the three month break saw them lose to bottom club, Mordovia Soransk. This has allowed CSKA Moscow to open up a five point gap on Anzhi who remain second in the league.
The defeat came despite Anzhi putting out their best available team, although Guus Hiddink afterwards pointed out that injuries picked up against Newcastle had weakened them.
The Anzhi boss had made five changes, mainly due to injuries, from the Europa league match although his big hitters such as Eto’o, Zhirkov and Diarra all played, Willian though out injured after having to come off against Newcastle .
After the match Hiddink had this to say;
“I’m not looking for excuses. I can easily say that we’ve not rehabilitated ourselves after the match against Newcastle, when we lost some players to injury. I would also not like to plead the bed weather and artificial pitch. We must analyse the reasons for the defeat and make self-critical decisions”.
It isn’t a case of getting ahead of ourselves but Newcastle must have a great chance on Thursday of making it through to the last eight.
