Alan Pardew “If I Was A Betting Man…”
The first week in January appeared to kill off any hope of cup glory with the meek surrender at Brighton, nobody then anticipated any kind of serious attempt on the Europa League which for most of the season had appeared to be purely a burden for those running the club.
Now with Newcastle possibly on the brink of going through into the last eight and Premier League safety more or less accounted for, according to the manager, in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday, Alan Pardew said;
“If I was a betting man, I would bet on an English team to win the Europa League this year”.
If Newcastle do get through then it would be ironic if the biggest threats were other English clubs.
Looking around the other non-English teams likely to go through, no doubt there are some decent teams but none of them look unbeatable.
The betting market backs this up with Spurs 3/1 favourites to win the competition and next best Chelsea 9/2, with Newcastle at 20/1 you might see it as an insult…or very tempting. Having beaten both London clubs at home this season, United would surely have at least a fighting chance against either/both of them, especially with those two clubs’ main focus on a Champions League spot.
