Asking Cisse To Play Wide Is Like Asking Kelly Brook To Make Your Tea
Following Papiss Cisse’s last minute winner against Stoke, Alan Pardew has been reflecting on the form of his centre-forward.
I don’t want to fall out with our manager but I don’t think I can agree with this assessment he gave to the Shields Gazette;
“He’s still had a great year for us, without the goals.
In some respects Papiss has played a lot better for us this year, his overall game has improved.
He just hasn’t had the goals, they haven’t broken for him.
That goal should do him the world of good, you don’t take somebody off like him unless the game plan changes”.
Yes Cisse has improved over the course of this season in terms of when asked to play out of position on the right but…
The point is though that Papiss Cisse should only play in one place and that is through the middle and as high on the pitch as possible, hanging right on the last man and waiting for the cross or clever through ball to latch onto, just like he did on Sunday to down Stoke.

Cisse hasn’t been great in front of goal this year but he suffered more than anybody from the Demba Ba fiasco, with Ba’s insistence on going through the middle leading to Cisse pushed out wide or at best, playing as a front pair which never looked like really working either.
However, playing a class (£10m) goalscorer such as Cisse to play out wide, is like getting a date with Kelly Brook and asking her to make your tea!
You could get any number of half decent cheaper alternatives who could play that wide role better than Cisse and in fact Gouffran, who is better than half decent, is somebody who is comfortable in that wide withdrawn position and is more of a threat from there than Papiss could ever be.
With vital goals in consecutive Premier League matches I can see Cisse continuing to thrive with the new found extra quality in out team/squad, it would be an interesting goals bet for next season – Ba v Cisse, I have a feeling Papiss would have my money.
