Top Clubs Support Europa League Finalists Qualifying For Champions League
The European Club Association (ECA) has been meeting in Doha, the ECA represents 207 clubs around Europe including Newcastle United.
Following UEFA President, Michel Platini, floating the idea in November of an expanded 64 club Champions League and a disbanding of the Europa League, the ECA has held an internal survey which found that 92% of members backed the current dual Champions League/Europa League format.
In their internal survey of the 207 members, nearly two thirds also backed a suggestion that the winner and losing finalist of the Europa League should be given a group stage place in the Champions League.
Following the get together, the ECA statement said that their memners backing for the idea of Europa finalist getting Champions League entry would have to be looked at carefully to see how it would impact on the current qualification process.
While we wait to see how strong a team Alan Pardew puts out for the FC Metalist double header, one thing is for sure, all the English teams, including Newcastle, would take the competition a lot more seriously with a Champions League spot(s) at stake.
