Pardew – “We Wouldn’t Have Beaten Southampton 6 Weeks Ago”

In the aftermath of today’s excellent win, Alan Pardew said something that was both uplifting AND chilling at the same time.

The manager had this to say with regard to the transformation at St.James’ Park;

“We’ve played Chelsea, Metalist & Southampton and Southampton were every bit as good as the other two…and we beat them all!

We wouldn’t have beaten Southampton six weeks ago.

We look a really strong outfit, we’ve worked as hard as Southampton and perhaps had a little more quality – but they are a good team and won’t have any worries about staying up this season”.

Today’s visitors looked a really good team and they played a high tempo/high risk attacking and forcing game, that Newcastle would almost certainly not have coped with six or more weeks ago. The new arrivals on top of Cabaye, Taylor and Tiote’s availability, have made United a totally different proposition.

Six weeks ago, who on earth would we have played in that Metalist match? I’m afraid it would have been similar to the starting eleven at Brighton and would no doubt have seen a very similar result.

When Coloccini had to go off today, there wasn’t a single drop of sweat on my brow when Mapou took his place, which would have been a flood if it had been Williamson coming on.

The fact we conceded early in both halves would have been something we’d never have recovered from earlier in the season.

The fact we went over two years without winning after falling behind in the Premier League, only to now do it twice in a month (Chelsea and Southampton), says it all.

Even for Newcastle this is a remarkable turnaround in potential fortune and expectations, let this be the foundations for something extraordinary.
