Newcastle’s Euro Opponents Hold Whitley Bay To A Draw
In a 5pm kick-off at Hillheads, non-league Whitley took the lead early in the first half through Scroggins, before Xavier levelled things for the Ukrainians after just over twenty minutes gone.
The remaining seventy minutes seeing Whitley Bay hold out despite predictably Kharkiv looking the stronger team as the match went on.
What exactly Alan Pardew took from this game is anybody’s guess as the visiting team made a number of substitutions and getting a bit of pitch time under their belts would have been deemed more important than any result.
However, Newcastle’s manager will hardly have seen anything to scare him from the Ukrainian opponents.
Metalist are currently fourth in their domestic league but it is now over two months since the Ukrainian began its winter break, something that surely can’t do them any favours.
Hopefully a good helping of sea air tonight won’t do wonders for them either but our prospects in this two-legged tie may be more to do with the strength of the Newcastle side put out on the pitch, rather than any other factors.
