Newcastle v FC Metalist – The Idiot Behind The Goal
Newcastle United should be going to the Ukraine with a couple of goals in the bag but were cheated by a couple of terrible decisions by the match officials.
This is what Alan Pardew had to say after the match;
“Both goals look onside from replays. Thought the first one was offside but it was proved it wasn’t, the second one I knew it wasn’t – I knew by the angle the ball went in and I was proved right again”.
It is bad enough when this happens in a run of the mill game but in a knockout situation it is all the more galling.
The amount of money swilling around UEFA and the best idea they can find to move football on into the twenty first century is to stick another official behind each goal, you quite literally ‘couldn’t make it up’.
If I remember correctly, in the entire European Champions last summer, the officials behind the goal only contributed to one decision in the entire tournament and I seem to recall they got that one wrong!
To pay for two extra officials who are no use whatsoever surely makes it clear that the only way to advance is to instead have one of them sitting in front of a TV screen and as if by magic, actually make a contribution and get the decisions right.
It surely brings the game into disrepute when the big talking points for the pundits after the match, are that Newcastle actually scored two goals and should have won the match. So it ends up that the crucial factor has not been any of the twenty two players on the pitch but the officials who are only really there to ensure fair play and act in situations where there is a judgement to be made with the naked eye.
Anything that can be measured by technology such as crossing the line or whether somebody is offside or not, should surely be measured by…technology.
Anything else is just plain daft but then this is UEFA.
