Newcastle United’s Young Players Win But Lose
Newcastle United were the only English team in this year’s Torneo Di Viareggio and now they have bowed out of the tournament in the Lucca region of Italy.
This is despite winning their final group match against Empoli which left them with two wins out of three.
The NUFC youngsters won 3-2 but the 48 team tournament only allows for two group runners up to go through and so only group winners AC Milan head into the knockout phase, United failing on goal difference.
In an end to end game Newcastle took the lead three times before eventually seeing the game out; Brandon Miele, Jonathyn Quinn and Macauley Booth grabbing the goals.
The win against Empoli followed a 2-1 defeat by Milan and a win by the same scoreline against a Congo representative eleven.
Newcastle United lined up;
Jak Alnwick, Alex Nicholson (Greg Olley), Lee Desmond, Steven Logan, Remie Streete (Alex Kitchen (Macauley Booth)), Lubo Satka, Brandon Miele, Jonathyn Quinn, Rolando Aarons, Adam Campbell, Alex Gilliead (Jamie Sterry)
The lads were unlucky to go out but no doubt great experience coming up against different kinds of opposition and tactics.
