Newcastle Miss Out On Target But Maybe Shows A Little Bit Of Heart Remains In Football
The exciting midfield prospect Florian Thauvin turned down Newcastle’s tabled bid in January, in favour of staying in France for his development.
Lille signed the player but allowed him to remain at Bastia until the end of the season, which was also part of Newcastle’s proposed bid.
This is what Thauvin had to say this week about his January options;
“Newcastle and Arsenal are very big clubs and the Premier league is also really big, so I was very happy with their interest.
It just makes me even more determined to make it to the top.
I considered it with my agents but we’ve always put football first and I thought Lille offer was most appealing.
Even though they are not doing so well this season, I am sure they will get their focus backs and have a really good season next year”.
It is certainly hard to see a French club (unless it was cash rich PSG) offering more money than English clubs, so you can only judge that he thinks he will get more matches and develop into a better player by staying at home a bit longer – rather than coming now to England on a lucrative four or five year deal which could financially make him.
So we lost out for the moment on one of France’s brightest prospects but maybe at least we have proof that there is another decent player amongst all the people who make you sick these days.
