Llambias Claims Demba Ba Has Been Replaced But Has He?

On the back of the two wins against Villa & Chelsea and the host of new signings, Managing Director Derek Llambias spoke to the local press about a whole host of things, including Demba Ba’s departure.

This is what Llambias had to say about Ba to the Chronicle;

“Demba was offered a decent deal, in many eyes it was a great deal, but it’s what he wants. He’s 28 and feels he has 3 or 4 years left and this is what he wants to do – I wish him well.

You’ve got to understand and look back at the basics of the deal – we took a chance on Demba and Demba took a chance on us. It sounds like an Abba song, the Abba deal!

Maybe he wants to prove himself but I have no regrets on the Demba deal or him leaving, we’ve got to move forward.

We had Demba for 18 months and he scored 29 league goals. He went out of the club his way and and we have replaced him”.

I agree with pretty much all Llambias says and Newcastle United and the fans most definitely got their money’s worth from him but…to claim ‘we have replaced him’   is open to debate.

The only signing this could relate to is Yoan Gouffran, but while he has impressed, is he in any way a replacement for Ba?

Newcastle were desperately short of a versatile striker like Gouffran and overall were short of numbers on strikers/goalscorers anyway, I know Shola has his own fan club but to count him as a goalscoring striker you would have to be wearing the ultimate rose-tinted glasses.

Gouffran has successfully filled a vital spot in Newcastle’s squad but there had been a longstanding vacancy going back much longer than before Demba departed these shores. The club have made clear anyway that they were going to sign Gouffran at the end of the season regardless and it was only a case of bringing it forward, so to suggest he is Ba’s replacement looks a bit hollow.

There is, or should be, still a vacancy sign hanging up at St.James’ Park and if it is still hanging there come next September, will Newcastle have left themselves short, yet again?
