Gazza Removed From Danger Situation

8 years ago

Weekend revelations showed that Paul Gascoigne was still having problems with alcohol addiction and needed decisive help as soon as possible.

Happily, the ex-Newcastle and England great, has been removed from a situation that was only going to get worse. Gazza has now travelled to America to get treatment and help.

The initial photos of Gazza’s sorry state at a sporting dinner, has predictably been followed up with a media feeding frenzy as they all have competed to get the most humiliating photos and ‘quotes’ from ‘concerned neighbours’ and so on.

By removing Paul Gascoigne to America, hopefully Gazza will benefit from the treatment on offer, plus is taken out of the full glare of that media intrusion that could only have helped send him further down a dark path.

A statement from Gazza’s management company, GamePlan Solutions said;

“Alocholic Paul Gascoigne has experienced a tough time of late.

He has been asking for help and so has willingly been admitted for treatment at a centre in America, he has complex issues that professionals are currently dealing with.

Paul has been overwhelmed by all of the offers of support and help in the past few days. He is now motivated to try and fully understand his addiction problem under guidance”.

The PFA also reacted to  criticism that they appeared to have done little to help the player with Chief Executive Gordon Taylor saying;

“ I can’t think of any player who has had more support and help over a number of years than Paul but a lot of that help has by its very nature had to be kept confidential”.

Unfortunately, Gazza is just a very public example of a widespread problem with alcohol abuse in the UK but if against the odds he could find the strength to pull himself back from the abyss, then he could be an inspiration to the thousands of people who are dealing with these kinds of problems every day, only they do it anonymously away from public scrutiny.

Let’s hope that a player who gave us so much pleasure can be inspired himself to find a second career/role as somebody who can help others with similar problems.
