Cabaye Reportedly Targeted By Arsenal & Manchester United
Arsenal are reported to be giving Arsene Wenger around £70m to shake up his squad and they value Yohan at around £15m. Whilst Alex Feguson is alleged to have ordered the Newcastle United midfielder to be closely watched with a view to a potential summer transfer bid.
The reports in the Express are hardly a surprise given that Yohan is currently fighting a relegation battle with United despite being one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League.
Signing very good players does also carry the downside of your players attracting interest form elsewhere. If Newcastle are in the upper reaches of the Premier League though, it will be a little easier to laugh off these transfer ‘stories’.
As for valuations, obviously newspapers pluck figures out of the air and what does £15m get for you these days?
Last summer I had to check my glasses when i saw Liverpool had paid that for Swansea’s Joe Allen and I’m still thinking that must have been a misprint…
While elsewhere, Chelsea paid £32m for Cabaye’s old teammate, Eden Hazard.
While the Premier league clubs are coming together to try and control player wages in some way, the simple fact is next season every club will be in the region of £30m (per season!) better off due to the new broadcasting deals.
That tells me that transfer prices/valuations will continue to head in only one direction, particularly for premium players such as Yohan Cabaye.
