Ben Arfa – ‘I Can Still Catch Messi’

9 years ago

A player that I can’t wait to see come back into the Newcastle team alongside new signings such as Moussa Sissoko, is of course Hatem Ben Arfa.

While we await to see whether Ben Arfa is involved against Southampton after illness set him back four or five days on his comeback trail, the player is as always big news back in his home country.

Interviewed by Le10Sport about past comparisons with Lionel Messi, this is what Ben Arfa had to say;

“I regret not maturing earlier because I think that today I would have evolved to a higher level. Maybe I’d be like him (Messi) today but I still have time – I can catch up”.

Hatem has had extreme highs and lows in his career but some of the goals we have already seen for Newcastle could have only been scored by a player with Messi-like ability.

What the Barca star does also have is an incredible work ethic and that is something that Ben Arfa has undoubtedly worked on at Newcastle and this season we were definitely seeing the benefits of a more consistent player, especially when at times he was single-handedly carrying the team in a creative sense.

If he comes back into what could be a full strength team with players such as Sissoko and Gouffran, plus a fully fit Yohan Cabaye, the sky could be the limit for Ben Arfa, which in truth it always has been for a player with his ability.

In previous interviews Ben Arfa has said he has no intention of leaving just so long as Newcastle are ambitious, so let’s hope new signings such as Mapou, Gouffran, Debuchy and Sissoko have ticked the right boxes.

There is no finer sight than Hatem Ben Arfa in full flight, especially in a black and white shirt.
