Time For Another Local Hero?

As the January transfer market intensifies, Newcastle take their time to fill the holes in what some would have you believe is a sinking ship with the crew jumping overboard.

I hope the inactivity is down to due diligence & previous signings would suggest that (Cisse being the best example), I tend not to read the gossip columns and only take real notice when credible sources (no, not Sky) get involved.

Radio Newcastle’s Mick Lowes did give me hope last week as he seemed to have it on good grounds that we were in negotiations with several players, one of those turned out to be Loic Remy which seemed all wrapped up only for Dirty Arry & his reverse smash & grab to scupper that one.

Opinions are divided on the Remy deal with many thinking that QPR throwing money at him somehow equates to NUFC lacking ambition, whereas I am of the opinion that we were lucky NOT to sign him.

Aside from the reports of a bid for a young French full-back Haïdara, there are no other solid reports linking us with the players we so desperately need, again I hope this is down to the club making sure all the boxes are ticked before making a move. However, there is one player I wish we would sound out, local lad & Toon fan Danny Graham.

For me it is a no-brainer; he is available cheap, a good age, has an eye for goal, can score in the prem & loves the club. Other factors include him scoring 27 goals in a season for Championship Watford & winding the Mackems up in an interview also whilst at Watford. When asked who he would support if his beloved Newcastle ceased to exist, he replied, “Put it this way. I would stay as far away from Sunderland as I could. It would probably have to be Gateshead.”

Sunderland making a bid for him has caused outrage on the message/media boards amongst fans.

I am not suggesting that he would be a direct replacement for Ba, or that he will be the new Shearer, but for £4/5Million he is worth a punt for a gambling man. The fact he is a fan lets you know he is likely to be settled unless the huge clubs come in for him, which again is unlikely unless he does emulate Shearer; win win.

As I write this he is probably signing a contract elsewhere (please be Norwich if not NUFC) and we will be contemplating another opportunity missed.

I have also heard Bent & Sissoko mentioned as possible targets, these again are 2 players who I would like to see the club attempt to sign, although in the case of Bent the wage structure might restrict us.

So who do you think we realistically could, or should, sign that has or has not been mentioned and which positions do you want to see strengthened?

NUFC to beat Reading 1-0 8/1
Cisse to score first goal 9/2
NUFC to lead at H/t and F/T 15/8
