NUFC Were Out Of FA Cup Before Kick-Off

8 years ago

I know they have a job to do but all the media rubbish about giant killing on Saturday was a right load of tripe.

Funny kind of giant killing when the ‘underdogs’ were actually clear favourites to win the match!

Honestly, when I saw the team my heart sank, I reckon our worst performance before Brighton was the Europa League match away against Bordeaux reserves, this is the side we put out that night;

Elliot, Tavernier, Perch, Williamson, Ferguson, Abeid, Bigirimana, Ranger, Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Shola

When we crept out of the FA Cup on Saturday it was exactly the same apart from Santon & Anita for Ferguson & Marveaux. While those two improved the line-up to a small extent, the true lack of ability beyond our best 11 or 12 players was simply proved again.

Even in a weak Europa League group Newcastle’s fringe players have struggled, unable to even beat a very poor Maritimo either home or away.

No coincidence that in the one convincing result/performance; Cabaye, Tiote, Anita and Cisse made up four of our front six players as we beat Bordeaux 3-0 at St.James’ Park.

I really hope that some of our young ugly ducklings suddenly transform into…players but I just don’t see it. With injuries and the extra Europa League matches, the likes of Ferguson, Sammy Ameobi, Tavernier, Obertan, Ranger, Abeid, Vuckic, Gosling etc have had numerous opportunities between them to take their chance and not one of them has put in an eyecatching ninety minutes. Please don’t confuse the odd run or shot, or even a ten/fifteen minute spell where they look decent against poor opposition.

I’m not suggesting binning them all immediately but what I am saying is that common sense dictates that these players are not ones you can rely on to dig Newcastle United out of the mess they find themselves in this season.

The talented young players who are clearly good enough are Bigirimana and Santon, if we get anything from the rest of them is a massive bonus.
