NUFC To Resurrect Failed Transfer? – Video
It is easy to forget but just twelve months ago it was reported as a done deal that Sochaux’s Modibo Maiga was moving to St.James’ Park, only for the deal to mysteriously collapse at the last second with vague claims of a problem with his medical.
All of that was forgotten though as Papiss Cisse quickly arrived and the rest as they say is history, or at least it is/was until this transfer window.
Now Maiga is rumoured to be a possible alternative if Ba goes and the Remy deal doesn’t come off.
The player of course eventually signed for West Ham in the summer and has made 16 Premier League appearances but tellingly perhaps, all but two of them have been as a substitute. He has two goals in the league and another two in two appearances in the Capital One Cup.
The speculation suggests that West Ham are looking to raise money for alternative targets and Maiga could be sacrificed, the fact he clearly isn’t seen as first team material at the moment would appear to back up the possibility.
The 25 year old striker is 6ft 2 and had previously scored 24 in 59 matches for Sochaux.
One short-term problem would be that Maiga will almost certainly be going to the African Nations with Mali later this month so his availability would almost certainly be delayed.
Looking at the practicalities of doing deals quickly in the transfer window, if Newcastle were needing to do a deal at short notice then having had past contact with the player’s representatives would be a possible advantage, though obviously there could be resentment after the previous deal feel down.
The waters of the January transfer grow ever murkier, let’s hope we’re still afloat in February.
In the meantime here’s a quick glimpse of Maiga in action.
