Norwich v Newcastle United – Match Preview
Newcastle United currently sit on 20 points after 21 Premier League matches, the lowest we’ve been at this point since SKY invented football with the advent of the Premier League.
Obviously if you are looking for any solace in our recent matches, then possibly you might point to what look better performances for much of the games against Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton but unfortunately it is points that dictate where you are at in the table.
With only 2 wins in the last 11 league matches (16 if you count all competitions…) it doesn’t exactly raise your spirits, especially when those two wins were at home against teams currently in the relegation positions.
Today we are up against a Chris Hughton team who went on a run of ten unbeaten Premier League matches before losing their last four in a row. That gives us a bit of encouragement but in recent times we’ve become the team to play if you are in the need of a lift.
The last time we visited it ended in defeat and a shocking defensive display, the only bright spot was a certain Demba Ba scoring two brilliant goals.
That day we had a very makeshift centre-back pairing of Perch and Simpson, with Coloccini, Steven Taylor and even Williamson all unavailable.
Today United travel without the recovering Steven Taylor, Coloccini has travelled but god knows what position he’ll be in to play with all the headlines yesterday. The good news is that…Mike Williamson is available.
Paul Lambert went more route one that day with both Morison and Holt up front, today the former is out injured and Holt has a late fitness test.
One quirky statistic is that while Norwich have scored the highest percentage of goals from headers (38%) in the Premier League, Newcastle have conceded the most headed goals (11).
Maybe Williamson will come into his own today?
Jonas and Perch should be ok to play as well as our very welcome new signing Mathieu Debuchy, Cabaye also travelled but the manager has said he will start from the bench.
I don’t feel able to predict a win but as long as Colo’s head is right then just maybe with the likes of Debuchy and Jonas added to the side we can have a bit more solid look in defence and not crumble as we have done in recent games.
The team could look something like this;
Krul, Debuchy, Coloccini, Williamson, Santon, Obertan, Marveaux, Perch, Anita, Jonas, Cisse
