Graham Carr Interviewed On His French Recruits

In the time that Graham Carr has spent at Newcastle United, he has helped bring in eleven players from Ligue 1, including of course five in this January transfer window.

Naturally there is plenty of interest in our head of scouting over in France as well and L’equipe caught up with him for an interview;

“We are going to try and get close to the Arsenal route but you have to be realistic. They had Vieira, Henry and Petit, some of the best players in the world. At Newcastle that is not the case…yet.

I love France and the French players. The reasons we are recruiting them is due to having a lot of fun and success working with Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa. They are real quality players, very professional and indispensable today. Both of them are intelligent and understand quickly what you want, they also have a very good tactical brain.

It is because the French youth academy system is so good. Our aim was to bring in young players with a future, such as Haidara, Sissoko and Yanga-Mbiwa; they are young and will progress even further.

I’m convinced it will go well and I obviously don’t agree with people who think that this big influx of French players will create a problem. Ben Arfa and Cabaye have integrated really well, as has Sylvain Marveaux, plus all three speak English”.

Of course it isn’t just the fact that the players are French, many of the players Newcastle have recruited are also internationals. So can you imagine the interest in the English press if a club in France that wasn’t a Champions League regular suddenly brought in five or six England internationals…I think you get the picture.
