Ben Arfa Turned Down Chelsea But Interested Now…

Today you’ll no doubt come across repeated ‘quotes’ that Hatem Ben Arfa is ‘interested’ in Chelsea, as well as Liverpool and Arsenal.

This comes from an interview he has done with ‘Bein Sport’ in France while he is on his recovery trail.

We reported on another interview yesterday [intlink id=”22875″ type=”post”]Ben Arfa – I Must Save Newcastle[/intlink] where Ben Arfa said how committed he was to Newcastle’s relegation fight and how much he thought of the manager and fans. Whilst also adding the obligatory ‘Yes I would love to play for (hometown club) PSG one day’.

The ‘quote’ that you will see regurgitated many times today will be,

“I am interested by Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, Today, these clubs are over Newcastle.

During the summer there was contact with Chelsea but I wanted to stay in Newcastle. Whoever tasted England, it’s hard to go elsewhere. There is everything to be happy”.

Our translator Pierre is still digging his car out of the snow but hopefully will later be able to have a look at what Ben Arfa did say before it was ‘translated’.

In the meantime, my take on it is that the ‘over Newcastle’ is simply a reference to those teams being higher up the table currently but as for ‘…interested in Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool’ we’ll have to see.

My experience is that journalists can be very good at putting words in people’s mouths, especially when they are relaxed and think they are having a ‘conversation’ as much as an interview.

I have no doubts that Ben Arfa is totally committed for the rest of the season and as for after that…well when we support a club currently only two points above the relegation zone and don’t know what division we’ll be playing in next season, who can be sure that any player will still be here?

Apart from of course the ones we already have that are Championship standard or worse.
