After Newcastle Bid Rejected, Transfer Target Opts For Home Comforts

8 years ago

A sixth transfer deal of this January transfer window has been stopped in its tracks, ironically by Yohan Cabaye’s old club Lille.

Bastia had earlier confirmed that Newcastle had made a bid of 3m euros with a 15% sell-on clause of any profit for their 20 year old highly rated midfielder, Florian Thauvin. The deal also included the opportunity for Thauvin to be loaned back for the remainder of the season.

When that bid was rejected, it was reported that nothing would now happen until the end of the season.

However, the player has belatedly moved but instead of joining the French contingent at Newcastle, the midfielder has opted to stay and develop in Ligue 1.

The Lille website reports that Thauvin has signed a four and a half year contract but as with Newcastle’s proposed deal, he will stay at Bastia for the rest of the season.

On joining Lille Thauvin had this to say;

“I am very pleased to join Lille, they have offered me a very attractive sporting project which I immediately liked and with the help of my advisors we agreed straight away”.
