Your Name On The Shirt?

The owners of Real Sociedad in Spain have come up with an intriguing twist on shirt sponsorship.

When the team took to the pitch for their match with Sevilla, the players each wore the name of one of the fans in the space where a shirt sponsor would normally appear.

The fans were selected from the club’s 25,000 members.

The club president, Jokin Aperribay explained;

“The fans are the soul, the nourishment and the reason for Real Sociedad. For this reason we’re uniting the names of of our members with the shirts.

It is for the history because the fans are the club and this is a tribute to those that have supported us for many years.

When we were relegated we overcame that difficulty because we retained 20,000 members.

We want to achieve bigger objectives but we can’t do that without the fans. The future will be determined by the fans”.

The club have also thanked the fans for their support by naming 22 of them in a television advert.

A number of clubs in Spain ended up with no shirt sponsor last season due to a dearth of companies offering decent money, though it would be hard to imagine an English club, including Newcastle United, doing something similar, preferring to take any money on offer rather than trying to benefit the club in a more long-term strategy by giving something for free to the fans..
