Shearer Lays Blame On Ashley
In an interview with The Sun, Shearer points the finger at a lack of investment in players in the summer as the main cause of the disappointing season so far.
“Newcastle missed a huge opportunity in the summer.
Having punched above their weight last season and almost made it into the top four, this was the time to spend.
The club was up and running again after so many years mired in uncertainty.
There was once again a feel-good factor and even Mike Ashley was enjoying it – but he needed to put his hand in his pocket and strengthen with two or three quality players.
I know Newcastle don’t have the spending power of those three (Manchesters United and City & Chelsea) but they most certainly could have found the cash to significantly strengthen that squad.
It’s up to Ashley how much he spends but just look at what Spurs did.
They pipped Newcastle to 4th place and went out and spent £57m on 6 players. Newcastle spent £8.1m on 3 and got a 4th in on a free”.
The fans didn’t expect Chelsea/Manchester City type spending, just sensible investment in the squad to help us build on last season.
Naive fans who were defending the summer transfer policy as part of some brilliant plan, are ominously quiet these days.
