Pardew – ‘This Is The City You Want To Work In’

8 years ago

On 9 December 2010 Alan Pardew was confirmed as the latest manager of Newcastle United, as he approached his second anniversary our manager has been taking stock of his time at St.James’ Park.

Why Newcastle United?

“That passion comes down from the stands, it has been a great weapon for me. If you are a football person this is the city you want to work in. In a big footballing city like this, it’s not easy to stand tall after four defeats”.

Speaking to BBC Sport Alan Pardew was also asked about how he’d settled in the north east –

Asked if he thinks of himself now as an adopted Geordie;

“One or two have said this to me but as a manager you just want to have respect. I think I have earned that”.

About the 8 year contract;

“It is a unique contract, Mike Ashley wanted and felt I was the manager for him. When you have been at a club a long time there is a stability there and you can start growing the club from below.
This summer was tough, I convinced Mike and the board that we needed another year with this team. So we kept it all together, some big clubs came in but they are going to pay a lot of money for our players”.

If you have to sum up Alan Pardew’s reign at Newcastle you would say that he steadied the ship when he took over from the popular Chris Hughton, he then built on that with some astute signings (Ba, Cabaye, Cisse) and after keeping that group together it is the ‘what now’?

This season it is clear that the squad is short of at least a few players and now we will see whether Pardew, having done all the ground work, is now given the opportunity to build on it.

Alan Pardew made clear in the summer he desperately wanted to buy certain players and Mike Ashley wouldn’t pay the asking prices, now once again the manager has said he needs us to come out of the January window in a much stronger position.

Mike Ashley wanted Alan Pardew as manager but now is he prepared to back his judgement to bring in the players he needs in January?
