Long Balls Equal Small Success
Thanks to the innovations and changes to diet and training, the game is more and more run on a scientific basis. This includes the treatment of injuries using an oxygen tent to accelerate recovery. We have come a long way since the ‘magic sponge’ was regarded as the panacea for all injuries.
The scientific approach to tactics has also evolved since the long ball game based on statistics that showed most goals came after only two or three passes. Tell that now to Barcelona and Spain!
Team systems have also evolved, negating the long ball. This season our team has launched, some would say humped speculatively, more long balls (up to Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse) than any other team in the league and look where that has got us.
I also wonder whether clubs collect statistics on back passes to the keeper.
From my observations, albeit limited, the pass back leads to loss of possession, as Tim Krul repeatedly humps speculative long balls…
