Is Jonas Part Of Solution Or The Problem?
Six goals scored but eleven conceded, most of us might have guessed it would be two defeats but not the manner in which they came.
The change of personnel and formation has brought goals, goals, goals but no points.
I remember when Dalglish came in and many people thought he would tweak a few things defensively and so we’d retain Keegan’s flowing football but also have a defensive edge, we know how that one ended up…
Similarly, Alan Pardew has gone for a different less defensive formation in these last two matches, partly through lack of playing options, and we’ve gone from only conceding two or less in just about every match (apart from Man City/Utd at home) to shipping eleven in two.
The obvious solution is that we need to add more quality players, who can help move us towards being able to play a more expansive game whilst at the same time keeping the stable door from swinging open every few minutes.
However, out of our current players, Jonas Gutierrez has been first choice ever since his arrival but has had many doubters this season.
The conundrum is that he has still given a decent amount of defensive cover this season, despite not reaching the heights of last season like so many of his colleagues, but next to nothing going forward.
Santon has certainly looked more exposed in Jonas’ absence but is Gutierrez now part of the solution or the problem.
It is a puzzle for Alan Pardew and when we reach those ‘winnable’ looking matches in January it will be interesting to see who the manager relies on to save our season.
