Pardew ‘We Were Suckered’

8 years ago

Alan Pardew was understandably gutted/sick as a parrot after the defeat at the Britannia Stadium and after the match went through blow by blow as to why he thought Newcastle deserved to win.

The manager;

“The improvement from Sunday was immense and I thought we deserved something from tonight, we definitely didn’t deserve to lose that’s for sure, we were the better side.

There’s a crucial moment in the game when we were leading and I thought we had a handball, I just looked again and I think it is a penalty, then two sucker punches really.

Their keeper made two great saves and it is galling as we’re on this losing run and we have setback after setback, I feel really sorry for the players as they were brilliant.

We’ve made a couple of errors with those goals and that cost us. We don’t make many errors but we have tonight”.

I thought the players gave it everything and certainly deserved a point, whether we deserved to win overall is more doubtful.

After you’ve led for so long it is infuriating to lose so late on, especially when it was two pieces of routine football that outdid us, after coping relatively comfortably whenever Stoke packed the box on set-pieces.

While I thought Howard Webb generally favoured the home side, I think the penalty decision would have been fortunate and the two saves their keeper made were standard stuff.

This was a battling performance without any frills and very little creativity. Our goal came from pressurising high up the pitch and that suggests where we might create chances in the absence of Cabaye and Ben Arfa.

The team have found some spirit but fluency/creativity might take a little more finding.
